- Bird and Wildlife Watching at Point Reyes. Established in 1962, Point Reyes is comprised of 100 square miles, including 32,000 acres of coastal wilderness. With 50 species of native land and marine mammals inhabiting the Seashore, its biological diversity stems from a natural occurrence of several distinct habitats. Nearly 20% of California’s flowering plant species are represented on the peninsula and over 400 bird species have been spotted at the Point Reyes Bird Observatory.
- Recreation at Point Reyes. Abundant recreational opportunities include 147 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, kayaking, backcountry camping, and beaches for swimming, picnics, beachcombing, and wildlife viewing.
Enjoy leisurely drives throughout the seashore to beaches and wildlife areas, such the Tule Elk Range. The park’s beaches are excellent places to view the January through April gray whale migration and for bird watching during fall and spring. Visit www.nps.gov/pore. - Attractions at Point Reyes. A 308 step walkway leads to the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse, built in 1870, at the end of a high cliff. Also part of the Point Reyes State Park, Bear Valley Visitors Center on Bear Valley Road in Olema offers excellent hiking along the Earthquake Trail.
